You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before – Rahm Emanuel
It only took a matter of hours – after the worse mass shooting in our nation’s history – for the Left’s politicization of the tragedy to begin. Hysterical clamoring for Gun Control coupled with blame for the NRA was sadly predictable – and seemed to take precedent over the horrors of the actual event. Outrage over the issue of silencers was a bit more unusual – but politically timely due to a bill before Congress.
The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots.
Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get.
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) October 2, 2017
Silencers don’t actually silence guns like the movies show them to.
Sean Davis wrote an excellent article for the Federalist explaining how silencers actually work – and why silencers are not used, nor desired, by criminals:
The sound of firing an unsuppressed AR-15 — the most popular rifle platform in America — is approximately 165 decibels, or dB. A jet engine from 100 feet away is approximately 140dB. A decent suppressor for an AR-15 (.223/5.56mm) can reduce the sound of that rifle being fired by 30-35 dB. Thus, a quality suppressor can turn what would’ve been a 165 dB, eardrum-bursting gunshot into a mere 135 dB gunshot — roughly the same volume as a jackhammer you might see a construction worker using.
Suppressors aren’t cheap, they aren’t easy to conceal, and it’s really difficult to find guns that can even accept them. When you know these facts, you can understand why suppressors are never used by criminals. They’re just not worth the cost or the hassle.
Hillary doesn’t appear to be that interested in actual facts.
Our grief isn’t enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again.
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) October 2, 2017
When Clinton says we must put politics aside, what she really means is we must put politics front and center.
Chuck Schumer got the memo.
.@realDonaldTrump it’s time to stand up to the @NRA & stand up for the over 30,000 Americans who are victims of #gunviolence each YEAR. 4/4
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) October 3, 2017
Some noticed the sudden focus by Democrats on silencers.
.@SenSchumer says he’s calling on Trump to “come out against the absurd law about silencers.” Seems to b where Dem energy focused post-Vegas
— Ali Rogin (@AliABCNews) October 3, 2017
Which is weird because Vegas shooter didn’t use a silencer https://t.co/quHXkHjXoH
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) October 3, 2017
Almost like Dems are exploiting mass casualties to push opposition to a bill that had nothing to do with it.
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) October 3, 2017
An explanation of Democrats’ tactics was provided.
Democrats: In the wake of the LV shooting we need to enact our entire agenda asap. Anyone who opposes is an accomplice to the shooter.
— Daniel (@ddwalk34) October 3, 2017
For the record, I don’t own a gun. I never have. I may own a gun in the future. I may not.
But I will always defend our Bill of Rights – of which the 2nd Amendment is a part.
Progressives had a different take.
The NRA is a terrorist organization. There’s no other way to say it.
— Michael Ian Black (@michaelianblack) October 2, 2017
By any reasonable definition of the term guns exist to cause terror, and the NRA is a terrorist organization.
— Morgan Polikoff (@mpolikoff) October 2, 2017
Democratic Senators joined the fray.
And once and for all, we need to make NRA stand for “Not Relevant Anymore” in American politics.
— Ed Markey (@SenMarkey) October 2, 2017
They tried to blame funding from the Gun Lobby.
So-called leaders with the power to schedule a vote are too busy lining their pockets w/ gun lobby cash to notice the blood on their hands. pic.twitter.com/DnjqLpGxVl
— Katherine Clark (@RepKClark) October 2, 2017
Since 1998, the NRA has donated $3,555,194 to current members of Congress. Find out here who has received donations. https://t.co/QVxthRTgR1
— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) October 2, 2017
There was one tiny problem.
It takes a special brand of D.C. stupid to insinuate $3.5M over 20 years is GAME-CHANGING when last year’s candidates spent $6.8 BILLION.
— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) October 3, 2017
The true strength of the NRA was revealed.
You can frame it as blood money but $10K is meaningless when Grassley gets $3m from businesses alone and $1m from all ideological lobbying.
The strength of the NRA as an organization is its ability to organize voters into blocs, not its money. https://t.co/UpUvuAGIkp
— Matthew Stinson (@stinson) October 3, 2017
Those pesky voters can be a real problem.
Some worried about the ongoing erosion of basic and fundamental rights.
The same people who want to take away our right to keep/bear arms also want to limit our speech, limit our ability to practice our religion and eliminate our basic due process rights.
Funny how the problem is always – always – normal Americans having rights.???@instapundit— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) October 2, 2017
And pointed out the obvious.
Here’s why we won’t have a “conversation” about our Second Amendment rights.
Because our Second Amendment rights are rights.
There’s nothing to talk about.??— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) October 2, 2017
Some interesting observations were made.
If you’re saying background checks and IDs are necessary to own a gun, why do you think requiring an ID to vote is “voter suppression”? #2A
— Rep. Steven Smith (@RepStevenSmith) October 3, 2017
Oppositions put forth.
In Marseille a man with a knife killed 2 people. In Vegas a man with a gun killed 58. You don’t even have to do math.
— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) October 2, 2017
Responses made.
In Nice, a man with a truck killed 86. You should do more math. https://t.co/K6JHoVRxxs
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 2, 2017
Democrats attempted to utilize emotion as argument – sometimes coupled with incorrect facts.
My 10 year old asked me how the shooter was able to get his machine gun. I told him that pretty much anyone in the US can. ‘But why daddy’?
— Boris Kodjoe (@BorisKodjoe) October 2, 2017
In 1986, Congress barred civilians from buying or selling fully automatic weapons made after that date, though individuals can legally possess older weapons after passing a background check and obtaining a special permit.
The process is extremely expensive and prohibitive.
Oops.
Other young children had their own questions.
While at the store, my 8 year old asked why people people are so apt to give up their essential freedoms for safety. Everybody clapped.
— Brandon Morse (@TheBrandonMorse) October 3, 2017
My 5 year old keeps asking me why people want a gun free country when 98% of mass shooting occurred in gun-free zones from 1950-2016.
— Brandon Morse (@TheBrandonMorse) October 3, 2017
Some had the audacity to make honest observations.
“We must pass laws we’ve wanted forever that we admit wouldn’t have made a difference” – every Democrat and most journalists. #GunControlNow
— Derek Hunter (@derekahunter) October 3, 2017
Others had the audacity to respond with facts.
Here is a chart of state gun ownership rates vs. gun murder rates. Notice near total lack of correlation. pic.twitter.com/GjdqPY5k1e
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 3, 2017
— Scott Weinstein (@scott_weinstein) October 3, 2017
With some qualifications.
Worth noting: more guns in fewer households as a percentage. https://t.co/rPdrd0EvID
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) October 3, 2017
Others worried over implementation.
Which specific gun control proposals do you believe would have prevented Las Vegas?
— Billy Hallowell (@BillyHallowell) October 3, 2017
Magic and wizardry. https://t.co/J6eDnCM4BW
— Brandon Morse (@TheBrandonMorse) October 3, 2017
The War on Guns will go so much better than Prohibition and the War on Drugs. I’m sure you’ll get it right this time.
— James Garcia Alver (@JayAlver) October 2, 2017
A true solution was even put forth.
Fine. Do the work. Get 3/5ths of states to repeal 2A. Then volunteer to go door to door and confiscate the guns. Yes, you.
— Sunny Winter (@sunnywintersays) October 3, 2017
The author quickly noted she meant 3/4ths of states – but her point stands.
Meanwhile, the need for a bit more work presented itself.
Yep! Which means she’d also need to convince 3/5ths of states to repeal 4A so confiscation will be easier.
— Nina Bookout (@NDBook96) October 3, 2017
Kurt Schlichter summed up the whole sorry mess with one tweet.
Support Free Speech ===> Racist
Support Free Exercise of Religion ==> Bigot
Support Due Process ==> Rapist
Support Right to Keep/Bear Arms ==> Murderer
Gosh, every time we seek to exercise our rights liberals say we’re bad.
Weird how that works.???— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) October 3, 2017
The exploitation of this tragedy for political ends is shameful.
And sadly predictable.
You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before – Rahm Emanuel
We need to be careful and vigilant.
Fundamental Rights are at stake.
Let’s make sure we protect them.
