Twitter is a place for viewing commentary and opinions from some of our nation’s brightest political pundits and analysts.
Twitter is a place for viewing commentary and opinions from some of the dumbest people imaginable.
Both of these statements are true.
Every now and then you see a comment so offensive or idiotic – from someone who should know better – that you’re left just shaking your head.
Time for a quick twitter visit with Ted Lieu and Joy Reid.
This…is Ted:
We just adopted a dog! His name is Abbot and he is a very cute one-year old Multipoo. #TuesdayMotivation pic.twitter.com/Oe3pnO5xa0
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) April 25, 2017
Ted is a Democrat and a junior member of the House of Representatives.
Yesterday, Representative Lieu decided to take decisive action:
Why I walked out of yet another moment of silence on the House floor for a gun massacre. We cannot remain silent. https://t.co/F4j4sCsOFw
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) November 7, 2017
Ted did so while using his phone to video himself for a livestream on Facebook.
This prompted some responses:
I’m going to enjoy watching you grandstand yourself into political oblivion.
— Jeff Carlson, CFA (@themarketswork) November 7, 2017
And an interesting back and forth:
You do understand that the moment of silence is out of respect for the memories of the slain, correct? https://t.co/YvUlVMz6tV
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) November 7, 2017
Yes and I have concluded the best way to show that respect is to jar people to take action to prevent future mass shootings.
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) November 7, 2017
Ted’s just sensitive that way.
Do you walk out of funerals regularly to go perform acts you believe are worthwhile, or do you maybe stay first? https://t.co/KaSFaxOQNY
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) November 7, 2017
I would not walk out of a funeral. But I will walk out of a moment of silence, and I will do it again until we get action on gun safety.
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) November 7, 2017
It’s vitally important to draw your personal line in the sand…
Will you also walk out for terror victims targeted by foreign-born terrorists until immigration reform is pursued? https://t.co/U3OdGAv8lz
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) November 7, 2017
If it’s done with assault rifle or gun modified by a bump stock, then yes. Also, nearly all mass shootings in US are done by US citizens.
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) November 7, 2017
If it’s done with a gun…
Ted also misspelled “Democrats”…
You have picky standards for which moments of silence to boycott. Why are some victims worth less than others? https://t.co/zhL84OsLRj
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) November 7, 2017
I am basing it on inaction on gun safety.
— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) November 7, 2017
Uh…
And I’m asking why inaction on other issues doesn’t merit similar action on your part, or if this is grandstanding. https://t.co/eTJPBOIXPb
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) November 7, 2017
Ted wisely decided to call it a day at this point.
But not before this little exchange had spread like political wildfire.
Watching @tedlieu crash in a fiery ball of blithering idiocy is one of the great joys of the morning.
— Jeff Carlson, CFA (@themarketswork) November 7, 2017
We’re used 2 grandstanding but this behavior belongs in the gutter.
For @tedlieu it’s about him.
Not those killed.https://t.co/ThKEjeWTl7— Sebastian Gorka DrG (@SebGorka) November 7, 2017
I really don’t understand how Dems don’t see what terrible optics this is. https://t.co/fHNJD6GD5a
— Alex Griswold (@HashtagGriswold) November 7, 2017
Ted Lieu – a shining example of Democrats’ disarray.
Moving from the outright offensive, we travel to the downright dumb.
I give you Joy Reid.
Joy Reid hosts AM Joy on MSNBC. She is the author of several books.
She frequently makes incorrect statements – including this beauty:
“Classical liberal” is an accurate term for a person who supports New Deal economics and social modernity but does not identify as socialist https://t.co/2a6tGqkljh
— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) November 5, 2017
There is absolutely nothing correct about Joy’s statement.
Nothing.
This prompted some pushback:
No. No it isn’t. Not even remotely close.
— Jeff Carlson, CFA (@themarketswork) November 7, 2017
And some definitions:
Classical liberalism is today in essence, libertarianism. It is completely opposed to the kind of welfare state and modern liberalism of FDR
— Maxxx? (@StealYoRedBull) November 5, 2017
And finally a bit of history:
And so in modern American parlance, “liberal” is synonymous with “social democrat,” but that has NOTHING to do with classical liberalism.
— Steven Hunter (@TheStevenHunter) November 5, 2017
While you ponder how mind-numbingly wrong Joy Reid was, remind yourself that she is a political analyst on MSNBC and has nearly one million followers on Twitter.
Twitter can indeed be a source of great knowledge and highly informed political takes.
It can also be a source of utter foolishness…
