Pardon Me

November 1, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Can Hillary Clinton pardon herself?

Far-fetched? Perhaps not.

Let us see what the United States Constitution says on the matter.

“The President… shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in cases of Impeachment” – Article II, Section 2 – U.S. Constitution

Those few words quoted above are all that our Constitution says about the President’s sweeping power of Pardon Rights. Simple. Powerful. Broad.Continue Reading

Dissembling Hillary

Investigation: a formal or systematic examination or research, a formal inquiry or systematic study.

Investigations are, by their nature, open-ended.

Investigations do not conclude until a conviction, acquittal or statute of limitations expiration.

Information is gathered in a methodical way and new information is taken in as it becomes available.Continue Reading

Hillary Uncertified

October 30, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

In overly simplified terms there are usually three types of voters.

Core voters – vote their party no matter what

Generalized voters – typically – but not always – vote their party.

Undecided voters – vote loosely and not consistently

This year I would re-classify voters into five new types:

Never Trump – You know who you are (Includes some Republicans)

Never Hillary – You also know who you are (Includes three Democrats)Continue Reading

Chickens Roosting

Quite the presidential mess. And deservedly so for some. Hillary Clinton Inc, FBI Director Comey, President Obama, The Department of Justice, The State Department. They all deserve what they are reaping with this literally unprecedented re-opening of the Clinton Email Investigation.

But the United States of America and its voters? They deserve none of this.

You and I deserve none of this.

Director Comey was either already biased in favor of Clinton from the very start of this investigation or he was pressured into becoming biased by…well, there really are only a couple of places the finger can point.Continue Reading

Wiki(d) Leaks

October 27, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

What follows is an attempt to sort through many of the quotes from emails that have been released via Wikileaks. Some have been taken directly from the Wikileaks released emails. Others were simply compiled via the internet. I have attempted to identify the noted source, position and/or title pertaining to each quote. The quotes have been grouped under appropriate topic headings. Obviously, this is far from exhaustive but I feel it does provide a fairly good sampling of the inner thought process of the Clinton Campaign. It should be noted that the Clinton Campaign has not, to my knowledge, confirmed or denied the authenticity of these leaked emails.

The Numbing of a Nation

October 25, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

In 1987, Gary Hart, the Democratic presidential candidate was caught having an affair with a woman named Donna Rice. It ended his presidential run.

Ronald Reagan, when informed of the breaking news famously quipped “Boys will be boys. But boys will not be president”.

One can only wonder what President Reagan would make of this election.Continue Reading

Comey’s Crimes

October 24, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Virginia Governor and longtime Clinton confidant Terry McAuliffe donated $467,500 to the 2015 Senate campaign of Dr. Jill McCabe. The Virginia Democratic Party (more or less controlled by McAuliffe) donated an additional $207,788 for a grand total of $675,288. This equated to more than a third of Dr. McCabe’s campaign funds. Mr. McAuliffe recruited Dr. McCabe to run in the first place – an election she lost to Republican Dick Black.

Why is this important? Why am I writing about politics on a day when I had told myself I would not do so?

Because Dr. Jill McCabe is married to Andrew McCabe. Andrew McCabe happens to be the Deputy Director of the FBI.Continue Reading

Being mindful of the uncertainty of it all I share my favorite parable.

A simple story bearing two thousand year-old roots and said to be of Taoist origin. I make no claim on its true beginning nor accuracy. I simply relay it to you as it was told to me.

Moderately Excellent

October 20, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

You knew he had to come prepared. He had to be at his finest for this third and final debate. Sharp. Focused. In control. He looked slightly nervous at first – recognizing the significance of the moment – but he settled quickly and moved forward with purpose. He was thoughtful yet tough. Aggressive but not pushy. He maintained his poise and exhibited a certain dignity. He spoke when he should and knew when to stay quiet. Yes, Chris Wallace was truly excellent, just outstanding in every way. Oh yeah, Trump was there too. And Clinton.

How bad is it when the moderator is the star of the show? Chris Wallace was not only great, he highlighted how truly awful the prior moderators were.Continue Reading

Calling All Leaders

October 17, 2016 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Those who most want to rule others are least suited to do so.

It’s an old adage but one that rings particularly true right now. That and maybe the one about how power corrupts.

We are currently enduring two of the least popular, least liked and least trusted candidates we have ever seen. One, seemingly corrupt and a congenital liar and the other childish, boorish and unpredictable (I’ll leave it to you to figure out which is which). It’s embarrassing. And scary. And ugly.

It’s this ugliness that has me thinking about the future – specifically our nation’s future.Continue Reading
