The ‘Red Flags’ Surrounding Red Flag Laws

August 9, 2019 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

In the wake of two recent mass shootings, calls for the enactment of Red Flag laws have risen exponentially. It’s perfectly understandable that so many want to do something, anything, to help prevent future tragedies such as the ones that took place in El Paso and Dayton. But blind enactment of Red Flag laws is not the appropriate response.

Red Flag laws are effectively prevention laws that allow law enforcement and family members to petition a court to have an individual’s firearms temporarily confiscated if the person is believed to pose a danger to themselves or others.Continue Reading

Civic Nationalism and the Inclusion of All Americans

August 6, 2019 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Following two separate instances of heinous mass shootings, CNN’s Jake Tapper spent the morning on Aug. 4 asking various presidential candidates about white nationalism.

Specifically, Tapper asked both Robert “Beto” O’Rourke and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) if they believe that President Donald Trump is a white nationalist. Unsurprisingly, both candidates answered in the affirmative.

Tapper, who had previously supervised the CNN Parkland Town Hall that celebrated disgraced Broward County, Florida, Sheriff Scott Israel, also had recently provided a platform on his show, “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” for self-described white nationalist Richard Spencer, who was publicly declaring his opposition to President Trump.

The intent behind Tapper’s questions to O’Rourke and Sanders seems clear—an attempt to conflate the term “nationalist” with “supremacist”—assisted by the inclusion of race into his phrasing. On its face, Tapper’s question, inference, and timing were disturbing, in light of the immediacy of the shootings.Continue Reading

Should Antifa Be Designated a Domestic Terror Group?

June 30, 2019 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Andy Ngo, a Portland, Oregan, based editor & photo-journalist for Quillette, was assaulted and hospitalized by masked and hooded far-left Antifa extremists on Saturday.

Ngo, who has extensively documented violence by Antifa, had written on Twitter a day earlier that he was nervous about the coming rally, noting that Antifa members had been “promising ‘physical confrontation’ & have singled me out to be assaulted.”

Following the assault, Ngo was hospitalized with multiple contusions, a black eye, and a torn earlobe. He also suffered a brain bleed that required overnight hospitalization. Ngo posted a video of himself moments after the attack, appearing shaken and covered in a white substance. Portland police later said that Antifa was mixing quick-drying cement into milkshakes to be thrown at those they targeted. It is not known if Ngo was hit with one of these mixtures.Continue Reading

A Constitution Worthy of Our Thankfulness

November 22, 2018 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

We were gifted the greatest of documents so many years ago when our Founding Fathers created the Constitution of the United States.

A mere 4,400 words long—7,600, including the amendments—and just four simple pages, it’s the oldest—and shortest—written constitution in the world.

And yet, nothing more important than the creation of those four pages has occurred in our history as a nation.Continue Reading

Is Voter Fraud Real? A look at California’s illegal voter registration problem.

October 31, 2018 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Ever since the 2016 presidential elections, the topic of voter fraud has gained more attention.

This was especially so following President Donald Trump’s statement that if it were not for illegal voting he would have won, in addition to the electoral vote, the popular vote as well.

Trump won the election with 304 electoral votes to Clinton’s 227. Clinton won the popular vote, however, by 2.8 million votes–or 65,853,516 votes to 62,984,825 votes for Trump.Continue Reading

An Unexpected Voice (Sort of)

Boy, you all want power. God, I hope you never get it. I hope the American people can see through this sham. – Lindsey Graham to Democrat Senators – September 27, 2018

During Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, Lindsey Graham gave a voice to what many were thinking.Continue Reading

Tariffs, Trade Deficits & Under-Employment

July 25, 2018 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Yesterday I did a twitter thread on the President’s use of tariffs and then dove a bit further into trade balances and under-employment.

I am not in favor of tariffs as an economic policy. But I am in favor of the manner in which President Trump is currently using them.Continue Reading

Supreme Issues – A Repost & A Reminder

July 9, 2018 by Jeff Carlson, CFA

Note: This a repost from October 16, 2017. It remains relevant on this historic day.

There is one over-arching issue that I’ve been almost singularly focused on.

The Supreme Court.

This institution shapes our national character more than any other – and its presence is felt far past any president’s time in office.Continue Reading
